What is Steel Stud Framing • Steel stud framing is pieces of steel that take the place of wood when framing a building. • Studs are made out of steel. • There most commonly used to take the place of wood framing in floors, walls, and roofs.
Advantages • With steel there are no warps, splits, or cracks. • If there is waste from steel it is recyclable. • You can have the steel pre punched for wiring and etc. • Steel is very strong and flexible, and can help with wind loads in certain areas of the country.
How its made • Steel studs are made from sheet metal that is made at a steel mill. Once the sheet metal is created it gets shipped off to roll-formers where they will shape the steel into usable framing pieces.
How to attach matterails • To attach anything to a steel frame you must use screws. For gypsumboards you would use 1 ¼ in bugle head screw depending on the thickness of the steel you are drilling through to attach your material.
Sustainability • With steel it is easy to recycle. The scrap left over from a building sight can be recycled or reused. It is cheaper to buy steel studs but can be harder to assemble walls and frames. • Steel will not rot like wood if it gets wet. • Steel is stronger and more durable also and can help with loads.
