  4. There is a difference between using the mail, and simply mailing.

  5. Full-Service Intelligent Mail • Effective Jan. 26, 2014 • Required for automation rates • Changes: • New barcodes on mailing labels • New tray/sack labels • New pallet placards • Electronic Documentation (eDoc)

  6. Full-Service Intelligent Mail Benefits: • Automation rates – lower postage • Mail tracking • “Street Cred” / Preferred Handling • Free Address Change Service

  7. Full-Service Intelligent Mail Requirements: • Compatible Software • Compatible Label Printing Hardware • USPS Business Customer Gateway Account

  8. Address Quality • Properly encoded addresses cost less to mail, and can be delivered sooner • Barcoding requires encoded addresses • CASS every 90 days or sooner • Reduces returns • CDS allows exclusion of vacant addresses • May enable in-county rates

  9. Mail Like 1st Class • Newspapers in flat tubs (a.k.a. trays) with green lids, mailed at OMX via labeling list L201 are processed as 1st class within approx. 1200 mile range. • Speeds distant delivery

  10. Limited Circulation Discount • Grants 5% discount on all outside-county mail • Eligibility: • Less than 5000 copies leaving the county • At least 1 paper in county • Applies to ALL editions of a given issue

  11. Keep Inserts Local • Shave pounds from outside-market pieces by excluding inserts • Uses an additional postage statement

  12. Exceptional Dispatch • Allows a publisher to enter mail at the delivery unit • Grants DDU discounts (4.5+ cents/piece) • Enables overnight/next day delivery • Verify and pay at main post office • No paperwork for additional post offices • In-county and out of county • Use 40lb bundles • No sacks or flats trays (tubs) required

  13. FIRM Bundles • Send multiple copies to the same address • Pay for one piece • Save 5 – 10+ cents per piece • Pay combined weight • Can have single addressed piece or be addressed individually • FIRM bundles do not go inside of other bundles

  14. Machinable • Grants a discount to newspapers meeting machinable standards • Savings of 3 to 17 cents per piece • Must meet “droop test” • Quarter folded papers typically qualify • No penalty for carrier routed, DDU-entered mail

  15. Correct Matters • USPS special requests may cost you long term • Software should produce ready-to-go mailing • Central plant should assemble according to sort

  16. Finding Support • USPS may not be best option for advice • Consult with software vendor • Press association • NNA • Quick Service Guides • DMM (yikes!)
