Bernard Schwob French agency for multimodal Information and smart-ticketing Simplifying public transportation through NFC mobile phones in Nice
Mobile phone services The mobile phone is a widespread media. It can become a travel companion that simplify the passenger experience The mobile phone with NFC technology can offer a large range of new services
Mobile phone services Purchasing Tickets Ticket & Account details validation Real time information Trip planning Local information
The project of Nice • A project launched by the local authority, the town of Nice • Transport solution specified and funded by the french company Veolia; service made available to the local authority • Multi telecom operators • Multimodal transport: tram, bus, coach, bicycle, soon car sharing • Multi services. Transport solution within a large dynamic ecosystem: - Payment :major French banks issuing VISA – MasterCard applets; with contactless points of sale deployed - Distribution (loyalty programs) - Community services / municipality / Tourism, museum, city tour • Transport solution designed to be deployed in multiple contexts (France and international) First commercial launch in Nice

Passenger information at stops LECTURE DES TAGS
Reading NFC (« cityzi ») tags or 2D barcode
Real-time information By passing his mobile phone in front of a NFC tag, the user accesses information on transport…
Local information … or on the neighbourhood and the city.
Payment solutions • Today, parameters set as follows: • On users mobile phone bill for purchase below 10€ • PaybyPhone payment system for purchases over 10€ (Distant payment; credit card n° associated with phone number + PIN) Open to other payment solution offering cost effectiveness + suitable ergonomic.
« French NFC way » • Impossible to roll out “alone” no critical size, no attractiveness if only 1 Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) + few service providers. • Independent services / applications coexist on the phone (like Appstore) • Therefore altogether… • Support of political leaders • Multi MNOs • Transport + Payment + Community services + Distribution / Loyalty + Tourism + Museum + … • Need common set of OPEN standards: • Global Platform • Technical specifications for interfacing with MNOs • For transport, full set of common functional & technical specifications to insure interoperability and compliance with transit authorities expectation • Calypso operating system for transport application – Java applet hosted in SIM
Questions to address before larger roll out • In the Nice trial , the transport application is not so easy to download: - can easily be improved • contactless existing terminals don't comply everywhere in France to international standards : 14 443 A and B - up-grading of the terminals is necessary • Need of a significant number of phones with NFC technology - only one model in the Nice trial last year: - more models expected this year • speed of transaction not so good as speed of usual smart-cards: - could only be a problem in dense areas if the solution is used by a large proportion of travelers • business model : need of a win-win game for all stakeholders
Verbatim « Using transport with mobile is outstanding because you always have it in your bag» « I don’t need anymore to queue at tram stop to buy ticket – I’m saving time » « You tap you go » « I’ts really useful, you can take the bus without having money on you » « No need to search your tickets » « To know when is the next bus is useful when you come back late, instead of waiting outside 20 minutes for the next bus » « When you know if the tram is far away or not, you know if you need to speed up or if you have time to stop at the bakery » « When I’m getting out of the bus, I read the tag to have the local map, the news, the exhibition around, … »
Why mobile phones in transit ? • Customers : - information and ticketing in a single media - no need to queue in line to buy fare rights • Transit authorities /operators - no need to issue expensive limited use fare media to occasional travelers - card issuance burden transferred to others - cost shared between all stakeholders • Mobile network operators - acquire new customers - new revenue streams with fees - transit as a killer usage to increase customers' contactless spending
Mobile phones... and other media • After the Nice trial: Other trials to be launched in 2011 by 9 other french cities • Other media: - Interoperable cards issued by transit operators - contactless bank cards An “universal” solution ( mastercard, visa...) No need to download an application • This range of solutions is an advantage for transit authorities
