  5. Symbolism Symbols in fiction are simply objects, actions, or events that convey meaning. For example, the room Mrs. Mallard sits symbolizes her domestic, homebound life. For “The Overcoat,” what might the overcoat that Akaky covets and works for represent?

  6. Concluding Scene Realism versus Fantasy After such a seemingly realistic story about the plight of one tireless worker, why does Gogol have a ghost enter? In other words, why not begin with the ghost? What are we to make of a reported ghost stealing overcoats? Is “The Overcoat” merely a prolix fable?
