Photography: Scott Hales • FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid • Apply for a FAFSA pin in December 2013 at • www.pin.ed.gov • Download the FAFSA application in December 2013 at www.fafsa.ed.gov • Complete your income tax form 1040 as soon as possible! (January would be best.) You must have this information to complete the FAFSA application. • Complete your FAFSA application and send it in quickly (January 2014!). Financial Aid
Photography: Scott Hales • FAFSA • The FAFSA is a nationwide form that is used by all students to apply for federal and state need-based financial aid at public institutions of higher education • It must be completed EACH YEAR for the upcoming fall • The student can list up to 10 different schools on the FAFSA • Each school that is listed will be able to access the data and process at their financial aid office Financial Aid
Photography: Scott Hales • What do you need to apply for financial aid? • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) required by all schools • There is no fee for this application • It becomes available January 2 each year and encompasses the fall, spring and summer of the upcoming academic year. • It must be completed each year • www.fafsa.gov • Private schools may also require the student to file a CCS/Profile application with the College Board • There is a fee for this application • https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/prf/index.jsp • Check with the individual school for requirements Financial Aid
Photography: Scott Hales • Available Options to Complete A FAFSA • There are three methods to file a FAFSA • On line via www.fafsa.gov • Recommended method requires a PIN for student and a PIN for the parent. The PIN serves as the FAFSA electronic signature. • Complete a PDF FAFSA • The PDF FAFSAs must be mailed for processing. • Request a paper FAFSA on the phone at 1-800-433-3243 • Information can be found at : • http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/options.htm Financial Aid
Photography: Scott Hales • Who Completes the FAFSA? • The student applicant • The parents of the student, if student is dependent • Parent(s) - the biological parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of the student • Grandparent(s), foster parents, individuals claiming the student on tax return, etc DO NOT provide information on the FAFSA unless there is a court established legal guardianship/established managing conservatorship • Step-parent IS part of the household and income information must be included • The spouse of the student applicant • If the student is married at the time the FAFSA was submitted but not married in the prior calendar year, the spouse’s income information must be included. Photography: Scott Hales • What does the FAFSA processor do with the data? • Establishes a record using the student’s Last Name, First Name, social security • This information is sent by the FAFSA processor to several govt. agencies • Social Security Administration • Department of Homeland Security • Department of Justice • Department of Veteran’s Affairs • Selective Service • National Student Loan Database • This data is matched at each of these agencies and a mismatch is reported back to the FAFSA processor and stored in the student’s record. Photography: Scott Hales • What does the FAFSA processor do with the data? • Calculates the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) based on the student category type; dependent, independent single, independent married • Establishes whether the record is selected for verification • Stores the data for schools listed on the FAFSA to be able to retrieve it • Sends a notice to the student via email and a Student Aid Report (SAR) of the results of the FAFSA application. This notice will also include information on mismatches and verification requirement Financial Aid
Photography: Scott Hales • What do the schools do with the FAFSA data? • Schools listed retrieve the data on a regular basis and do edits to the student FAFSA record to see what requirements may be needed. • If there are any requirements needed the schools will send a notice to the student of what information and/or documents the students will need to present to the school • The school will review the documents and see if the mismatches can be cleared. The agency will then reprocess and return the results to the school. Financial Aid

Photography: Scott Hales • State Programs: Texas Educational Opportunity Grant • Individuals who • Are Texas residents; • Show financial need; • If applying for a first-time award, have a family contribution of no more than $2,000; • Register for the Selective Service or are exempt from this requirement; • Are enrolled at least 1/2 time (6 semester credit hours) in the first 30 hours (or their equivalent) in an associate's degree or certificate program at a public two-year college in Texas; • Have not been granted an associate's or a baccalaureate degree; and • Have not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving a controlled substance. Photography: Scott Hales • State Programs: Be On Time Loan • The Texas B-On-Time Loan program is a zero-interest loan. Your institution's financial aid office will determine if you are eligible. If this loan is offered to you, the financial aid office will instruct you to complete an application and promissory note online. • Be a Texas resident or be entitled to pay resident tuition rates as a dependent child of a member of the U.S. armed forces; and • Meet one of the following academic requirements: • Have graduated from a public or private high school in Texas under the recommended high school program, or its equivalent; or • Not have been granted a baccalaureate degree; • Be enrolled full time in an undergraduate degree or certificate program at an eligible institution; • Have completed a FAFSA and be eligible to receive federal financial aid.
