1. The Female Reproductive System Functions • Produce ova (eggs) • Provide a place for implantation of fertilised ovum and development of foetus • Produce some female sex characterisitics
Organs of female reproductive system • Ovaries • Fallopian tubes (oviducts) • Uterus • Vagina • Vulva • Mammary glands (breasts)
Ovaries • Positioned in upper pelvic cavity, one each side of uterus • Produce ova (pleural for ovum) • discharge ova (i.e. ovulation) • secrete oestrogen & progesterone
Fallopian tubes • Transport ova from the ovaries to the uterus • One either side of uterus measuring 10cm • Funnel-shaped opening at each end called infundibulum. It is surrounded by a fringe of projections called fimbriae. • Fertilisation usually occurs in upper third of fallopian tubes
Uterus • Menstruation • Implantation of fertilised ovum • Development of the foetus during pregnancy
Uterus cont’d • Positioned between urinary bladder & rectum • Shaped like upside down pear • Consists of fundas, body, and cervix • 3 layers – serosa (outer layer) - myometrium (middle muscle layer - endometrium (inner layer that is shed during menstruation)
Menstrual cycle • Is changes in the endometrium • Associated with the maturation of the ovum
Vagina • Passage for menstrual flow and is lower part of birth canal • Muscular and lined with mucous membrane • Hymen is thin mucous membrane in lower part
Vulva • External genitalia • Labia majora – outer lips of vulva • Labia minora – inner lips of vulva • Clitoris – anterior junction of labia minora
Perineum • Diamond shaped area between vulva and anus
2. Male Reproductive System Functions • Produce sperm for fertilisation of female ovum • Secrete hormones necessary for male sexual characteristics
Organs of Male Reproductive System • Testes • Vas deferens • Prostate gland • Seminal vesicles • Urethra • penis
Testes • Are oval shaped • Produce sperm • Secrete testosterone • Also called gonads
Scrotum • Hold the testes • Is divided by an internal septum into two sacs • Controls the temperature of the testes
Disorders of Testes HYDROCELE • Swelling, hernia due to fluid in the testis VARICOCELE • Swelling, hernia of veins of spermatic cords in the testis
Epididymis • Are coiled ducts which lie along the posterior border of the testes • Stores sperm Vas Deferens • Carries sperm from epididymis to ejaculatory duct and joins the urethra Act 3, 4
Spermatozoa (sperm) • Produced in the testes (approximately 1million /day • Live for approx.48hrs in female reproductive tract • Composed of head, middle piece and tail
Seminal vesicles • Pouch at base of bladder • Secrete semen which is a mixture of sperm & secretions
Prostate • Encircles the urethra below the bladder • Also secretes semen
Penis • Male erectile tissue through which semen passes through the urethra • Glans (acorn shaped end) is covered by foreskin known as prepuce
Disorders of the penis • Epispadias – urethra opens onto the dorsal side of the penis • Hypospadias – urethra opens onto the posterior or underside of the penis
Perineum • Area between scrotum and anus
