  1. EXERCISE 2G Calculating r and the coefficient of determination

  2. DON’T BE ALARMED!! • USE YOUR CLASSPAD AND YOU’LL DO FINE!!! • CLASSPAD INSTRUCTIONS: • CALC • LINEAR REG • XLIST: MAIN\INDEPENDENT VARIABLE • YLIST: MAIN\DEPENDENT VARIABLE • TAP ON ‘OK’ • READ THE R VALUE CORRECT TO TWO DECIMAL PLACES.

  3. Grab it from your calculator and multiply by 100

  4. Correlation and causation • Say we saw r = 0.91 for height and the number of slam dunks in a basketball team. • This is a strong association between the height of basketballer and the number of slam dunks he makes, however we cannot assert that the height causes him to make a lot of slam dunks. • Factors: skill level, accuracy, abilities of opposing team etc.

  5. EXAMPLE (taken from Q9 pg 96)

  6. CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK • Complete Exercise 2G pg 94 Q’s 1-8
