  4. 1 | DESCRIPTION 1.1 | MC-RRH900 Theoretical Overview

  5. MC-RRH Introduction • MC-RRH is a Multi-Carrier outdoor Remote Radio Head which can be mounted close to the antenna • This has the advantage to reduce feeder losses and therefore improve coverage. • It reduces also the required BTS footprint • MC-RRH is based on MCPA architecture • It’s having scalable capacity by simple remote configuration • MC-RRH is multi-standard capable: • Supports multi-mode operation of 2G & 3G • In next step LTE

  6. MC-RRH Architecture 2 Antennas Duplexer Duplexer MCPA MCPA Analogue MC-RRH Digital processing Optical interface Power Supply Fibre optics CPRI Power Feeding • The MC-RRH architecture is based on 2 MCPA, each at 40W, in order to be MIMO ready with a single MC-RRH module. • An MC-RRH constitutes an independent network element (outdoor box) communicating with its BTS site manager (central box)

  7. MC-RRH 900MHZ Characteristics (1/3) • Physical characteristics: • Zero footprint / Volume = 23 litres • Dimensions W x H x D = 359mm x 320,5mm x 174mm • Weight :18 kg Operating temperature • -40°C and 55°C (no fan) Reliability • MTBF ~ 115700 hrs. @ 25°C

  8. MC-RRH 900MHZ Characteristics (3/3) MC-RRH GSM + WCDMA performances One PA dedicated per technology TRE1 2G TRE2 PA1 8W TRE3 PA1 dedicated to GSM carriers PA2 dedicated to WCDMA carriers TRE4 PA2 40W f1 3G

  9. MC-RRH Benefits • Mounting MC-RRH close to the antenna eliminates feeder losses, lowering the RF power required and correspondingly reducing power consumption. Also it reduces feeder cost • MC-RRH is virtually a no-footprint solution and a noise-free (no fan) module: it minimizes impacts on the neighbourhood and makes negotiation with site owners easier • MC-RRH is multi-standard capable supporting simultaneous operation on 2G & 3G • The number of 2G carriers and the mode of operation 2G vs 2G+3G can be configured via remote configuration"

  10. 1 | DESCRIPTION 1.2 | Multi-Standard Distributed BTS solution

  11. Overview • Alcatel-Lucent Multi-standard distributed BTS solution is based on the MC-RRH unit, built on the principle of MCPA technology • The components of the distributed BTS in 2G/3G multimode are: • RRH2x40: The main radio unit containing the transmitter and receiver functions as well as the GSM baseband processing. • AC/DC conversion: Required to provide 48V DC for the RRH2x40 and provide battery backup in case of loss of power grid • GSM SUMX19’’: Provides the transmission termination to 2G BSC and Base Station Control function. Also it’s the entity which is used to configure the MC-RRH • WCDMA D2U: Provides the transmission termination to 3G RNC and digital processing function • Antennas: Normal standard antennas to be used

MC-RRH 900MHz - Optical Connectivity MC-RRH 2G/3G optical connectivity: Towards digital part of the NodeB using optical fibers supporting CPRI, carrying downlink and uplink (main and diversity) base band signals, and OAM information. GSM traffic is carried via GE on optical links to the SUMx. SFP modules have to be inserted in the SFP cage of the digital modules (SUMx/D2U) and MC-RRH. In Multi-mode and SM-DF, the SFP used on each side are the same. In single-mode /SF, the wavelength of the SFP on each side is different. SFP references, are given in the figure Optical cables exist in different lengths from 5m to 300m MC-RRH SFP D2U or SUMx SFP 850 nm Optical fiber MM-DF 850 nm 1AB187280063 1AB187280063 1550 nm Optical fiber SM-SF 1310 nm 1AB194670018 1AB194670019 Optical fiber SM-DF 1310 nm 1310 nm 1AB187280065 1AB187280065 1 to 3

  17. SUMX 19 Inch Characteristics (1/3) • The SUMX19’’ (Station Unit Module eXtended nineteen inch) is required to form with the RRH2x40 a distributed BTS. It realizes the following functions: • Transmission termination • Clock generation • SW download • Alarm collection • O&M functions • The SUMX19’’ box contains the same SUMX as it is used in the Alcatel-Lucent Macro cabinet. It comes in a standard mountable 19’’ housing and is intended to be mountable in every standard nineteen inch rack. • In addition to the SUMX in the Macro cabinet a daughter board is plugged to realize the optical interfaces to the RRH2x40 and it allows also the connection of a fiber based Abis transmission interface. • A SUMX19’’ is operating every RRH2x40 independent of the frequency band.

  18. SUMX 19 Inch Characteristics (2/3) • SUMX Main board(2 ABIS port for PCM connectivity, 2 HSE ports, IPoEth (TRANS), MMI port for craft terminal) • SUMX_GNC • 5x SFP cages optical links • HSO1, HSO2, HSO3 : MC-RRH connectivity • OPT1, OPT2 (ready for evolution) Ethernet connection for BTS NEM Optical connection to MC-RRH (3 per SUMX) ABIS Connections

  20. 9326 D2U: WCDMA Digital part In WCDMA, the MC-RRH is connected to the 9326 D2U (CCM board) on CPRI links 1 to 3. The D2U hosts 1 to 3 CEM boards. The number of CEM is dependent on the capacity required: Up to 2 frequencies per CEM, up to 6 cells per CEM (and 12 cells per D2U), 256 R99 CE & 128 HSxPA users / CEM. The D2U supports on the Iub interface of the CCM: Up to 8 PCM (4PCM on the mother board and 4 PCM on the MDA 4PCM) or GE interface (the MDA 4PCM is then replaced by a MDA/GE, as shown in this figure ). 36. Frequency Allocation Notes MC-RRH module covers frequency bandwidth of 25 MHz called ‘PA RF BW’ or ‘MC-RRH module frequency span’ The spectrum is 35 MHz large in 900 band (PGSM + EGSM) The frequency allocation of 2G/3G carriers defined on MC-RRH shall use a frequency window smaller than the MC-RRH module frequency span. According to the carriers used , this limited bandwidth (25 MHZ) is shifted within the 35 MHz Apart from that, as general rule of frequency allocation, proper 2G/3G planning should be followed in order to avoid interferences between the two technologies MC-RRH module 2G/3G frequency span (25 MHZ) TRE1 2G TRE2 PA1 TRE3 3G carrier 2G carriers TRE4 PA2 f1 3G 900 band (35 MHZ) MC-RRH in 2G/3G mode
