Do you spend a lot of your work hours in front of a computer? Being in a sedentary position day in and day out takes a toll on the body. Sitting for hours on end also compromises blood circulation in the body. The best thing you can do to prevent pain, as well as health issues, is to take measures to improve your seating. Here are a few tips to help you make that happen. Apply them in your situation to see the changes they can bring. Invest in the Right Furniture One way that you can improve your seating is to find furniture that provides ample back support. You want a chair that helps you stay maintain optimal posture in front of the screen. That chair should adapt to your movements and should provide support for your neck and spine, too, when you lean back. Armrests are a must, too, since they help ensure comfort. If you are designing your office or the control room consoles at work, make sure you keep this in mind. Fix the Monitor Placement Another way you could fix the seating is to check the placement and position of the monitor. It is at the right height? If it’s too low or too high, that could be why you’ve got pain in your neck from looking up or down for hours. You want to make sure that monitor is at the right height. The optimal viewing distance is about 30 inches to 35 inches. Consider if your monitor falls within that same measurement.
Mind the Feet Position It might seem comfortable to put up your feet on a console under the desk. But that’s bad for your blood circulation that’s why it’s best for your feet to be flat on the floor. You could have a platform to provide support for that if your feet can’t reach the floor. Without a platform to support your feet, you’ll feel sore after hours of having your feet dangle from that position. That’s not the best way to improve your seating. It could also lead to frequent cramps in your calves. Prevent all that simply by positioning your feet right. Factor in the Position of the Arms Aside from your feet, your arms must have support as well. That's why chairs with arm rests are welcome. They provide that much needed support you need to ensure that you’re comfortable even as you spend hours at your desk. Without arm support, your muscles will tire out more easily and get sore. You could end up with stiffness and pain in your muscles. Prevent that from happening by finding a chair with arm support. That or you could make sure your desk is big enough to offer that. Is there enough room for you to move around? Or do you feel hemmed in by the size of the desk? Be sure to consider that as well. You want to be comfortable, so you need to have more than enough space where you could move around.
