  3. What is a thesis? • One Sentence Argument • Makes a main argument supported by at least one specific reason Britain’s imperialist actions were innocent because their main goal was to help educate the natives of the countries they colonized. Main Argument Specific Reason

After the thesis… Topic Sentence that gives one of your main arguments: • The British were innocent because they had good intentions when taking over colonies. • Explain evidence #1 • The following quote by a British man named Cecil Rhodes in the 1800s shows that the British honestly believed that they were so much better than the Africans and Asians that they were doing the natives a favor by taking over their countries and civilizing them: • Read evidence #1 (short quote) • "I contend that we are the first race in the world, and that the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race."
