May 13th • May 13 is the 133rd day of the year (134th in leap years) in the Gregorian calendar. There are 232 days remaining until the end of the year. • More importantly it is my birthday.
The Zodiac: Taurus • Those born on May 13 are Taurus individuals. • Taurus is an Earth sign, therefore those who are Taurus are: very polite, follow what is socially accepted, very business oriented, longing for material goods, and are not prone to physical violence. • A few of these things relate to my own persona, not many though.
About myself… • I, like a few of those who were born on the same day as me, am a scientifically oriented person. • I also like to think of myself as being funny, again like one of the people I have listed. • However, unlike the Zodiac insists I am not business oriented, I do not always follow the social norm, and I’ve had moments when I was not so polite.
May 13 in History • May 13 was an important day in history. Some of the events that occurred include: • Thomas Edison performs the first test of his electric railway. (1880) • The first commercial FM radio station in the United States is launched in Bloomfield, Connecticut. (1939) • Velcro is trademarked. (1958) • Mehmet Ali Ağca attempted the murder of the pope (1981) • As well as many others… • Many important people were born on this day as well.
Stephen Colbert – May 13, 1964 • Stephen is a political satirist, writer, and comedian that hosts a “fake” news show on Comedy Central called The Colbert Report. • By fake, this simply means that it is a satire of the politically driven shows on television such as The O’Reilly Factor. • Before hosting this he starred in a comedy called Strangers with Candy and another show like his own, The Daily Show. • Stephen has also played roles in movies and other TV shows. • He has written a book containing political satire titled I Am America (And So Can You!).
Carl von Linné – May 13, 1707 • A botanist, physician, and zoologist • Swedish scientist who set the foundation for the commonly accepted binomial nomenclature system of naming organisms. • He developed Linnaean taxonomy, the widely accepted organizational system for organisms. • The hierarchy goes: Kingdom -> Phylum -> Class -> Order -> Family -> Genus -> Species • Binomial nomenclature is the “scientific name” given to organisms consisting of the genus and species name. (e.g. Canis lupus –gray wolf) • After creating this system he classified himself as Carolus Linnaeus, a Latinization of his real name.
Georgios Papanikolaou – May 13, 1883 • Studied at University of Athens and received his medical degree in 1904. • After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Munich he immigrated to the U.S. where he would continue his study on disease of the female reproductive system. • Developed the Pap smear– a technique used to detect cervical cancer by smearing cellular debris from the area surrounding the cervix to identify malignant cells under a microscope. • This technique would meet skepticism in the scientific world. • He later published The Atlas of Exfoliative Cytology which would set the foundation for the modern specialty of Cytopathology.
