NSPCC – Teenage Abuse • Improving Safeguarding in Schools (ISIS) is a new online self-assessment and development resource to help schools improve children's safety and well-being. ISIS features a step-by-step online guide to help schools audit how they are meeting safeguarding standards. The standards have been cross-referenced with the OfSted self-evaluation form and National Healthy Schools framework. ISIS covers six quality areas:
NSPCC – Teenage Abuse (cont) • promoting emotional health and well-being • pupil behaviour • child protection • safety and security • governance • staff • ISIS will build the skills and confidence of staff and governors in safeguarding children. It will reassure parents and carers that the school is actively involving pupils in improving standards to help keep them safe. For further information visit www.nspcc.org.uk/isis
ChildLine Schools service Direct quotes from children: “If children know that there is a lot of help out there they wont be scared to tell” “Abuse should be discussed but no one wants to talk about it”
Aims The aims of the ChildLine Schools Service are: • To ensure children have an understanding of abuse in all its forms, including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of abuse. 2. To ensure children know how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse. 3. To make them aware of how to get help and sources of help, including ChildLine.
Delivery The ChildLine Schools Service will: • Be delivered in all primary school every two years across England, NI, Scotland and Wales • Be focused on children from 5 to 11 years old, with a particular emphasis on 7-11 year olds. • Involve an assembly and interactive workshop
Assembly and workshop The assembly and workshop will cover: • Definitions of abuse – physical, emotional, sexual and neglect • Where to and who to go to for help – including teachers, social workers, parents • Information about ChildLine HelpLine and on line The Workshops are interactive involving games, discussions, whole class and small group activities. Teachers and school staff play an important role in helping to deliver safeguarding messages to children. • Contact: Jan McDonald • 01489 895823 • 07834498319 • jaspinall@NSPCC.org.uk
Healthy Schools update 1 A reminder that: • The national Healthy Schools toolkit is hosted on the Department for Education website. • www.education.gov.uk/healthyschools • from the home page find it on Schools > Pupil Support > Pastoral Care section. • The Whole School Review tool and the Healthy Schools planning template (with its associated School Story template) are the main tools. • The toolkit also contains information and frameworks for identifying needs, defining outcomes, developing activities/interventions and reviewing achievements.
