Bike Rack Mapping & Data Collection Sustainability 1
Introduction Research Questions: • Do we need more bike racks on campus? • Can we relocate current bike racks to provide ample storage?
Methodologies- GIS Mapping • Split into groups and log GPS coordinates of bike racks on campus • Collected information on: location, number of bikes stored, type of bike rack.
Methodologies- Chalking • Each member picked a bike rack in a high-use area • Chalked the tires of the bikes twice a day (am and pm) for three days straight. • Used different chalk for morning and night • How many bikes were there? # chalked? # New? Special Notes Findings • Liberty and Bellsouth: Some bikes were stored over long periods. • Maybank and Ed Center: No bikes stayed over long time period
Conclusion • There will be a public GIS map online for reference. • Larger bike racks like those already present in CofC parking garages could hold far larger volumes, moving use off of overcrowded bike racks.
