International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) GOAL: to improve clinical and field management of malaria
Malaria in Malawi • Burden of disease • 5-7 million cases every year • 7000 deaths • Most deaths occur in children <5 • Adult lose an average of 15-25 workdays per year
Study Objectives Goal : to determine proportion of malaria-like illnesses were evaluated at Chikhwawa District Hospital
Selection of Villages • Village selection was done with the help of the DHO and DEHO • Two near (5-7 km) • Two far (20-25 km) • ACTIA and PREGACT study excluded
23% (102 of 436) of individuals in all households had a fever in the last month.
What place of care do people go to first when they have a fever?
Conclusions • About 2/3 of people with fever are seen at Chikhwawa District Hospital at some point • People from the near villages (Lauji and Kapasule) are more likely to go the District Hospital first when they have a fever • Most people who go to the District Hospital are satisfied with their care • Over 90% of patients that were treated with anti-malarials got LA
Next Steps • ICEMR • UM will do a larger scale study • Includes Chikhwawa • The results of this survey will help to understand what people do when they get sick
