Migration Terms • Anchor Babies – those born here to an illegal immigrant – granted citizenship – may cause ↓ (negative term) • Chain Migration – the migration of others is encouraged through communication (letters, phone calls, E-mails, texts…) • Step Migration – movement that occurs in stages or steps (Guatemala → Mexico City → San Antonio → St. Louis) • Intervening Opportunity – opportunity that halts or delays migration (get a good job, buy a house, fall in love…) • Intervening Obstacle – obstacle that halts or delays migration (ocean, mountain, Wall, immigration laws, lack of money…) • Forced Migration – involuntary movement (slavery, arranged marriage…)

Counter Migration – typed of forced migration (involuntary)practiced by a government (deportation, removal of refugees, Holocaust...) • Return Migration – voluntary return to homeland (India → receive college education in US → India) • Net Migration - difference between immigrants (into) & emigrants (exit) – used in PGR • Xenophobia – fear of foreigners (or things foreign) • Remittances – money made here but sent home to support family ($ made in GA → Mexico) • Cyclic/Periodic Movement – daily/periodic activity space (daily commute, college students, migrant workers, business trips…) • External/International Migration – between countries (Italy → US) • Internal/Intranational Migration – within a country (NY → Atlanta) • Remember, tourism is NOT migration • - because it’s NOT permanent
