The Berry-Go-Round Collin White, Burns Cunningham, Trevor Toll, Julie Carrell
Overview Dimensions 0.5m x0.5mx0.5m Set up: 30 seconds Duration :15 seconds Object: lead ball and ball bearing Begin coaster by hand The rollercoaster starts off inside a spiral with the ball bearing. At the end of the spiral the ball bearing hits the lead ball causing it to fall into a PVC pipe leading to a loop. The lead ball goes up a curved incline and falls into a funnel. It then gradually rolls through a PVC pipe ending in a landing pad.
Equations • PE = KE + Eloss • Energy: mgh=1/2mv^2+Eloss • Ex: On roller coaster when ball bearing is released • Conservation of Momentum • P1 + P2 = P1’ + P2’ • Ex: On roller coaster when ball bearing hits lead ball
Cost • Pipe Insulation: $1.00 • Plywood & wooden dowels: $10.00 • FUNnel: $1.00 • 50 caliber muzzleloader lead shot: $2.00 • Ballbearing, PVC: $1.50 • Clear Tubing: $8.50 • Total Cost: $24.00
Fun facts • Length of time on project: 7 hours • Total work and planning: 9 hours • Adversity: • Planned roller coaster differed greatly from actual roller coaster • Friction was a momentum killer (haha) literally and figuratively
