Adhere Verb: • To stick tightly to a surface • Ex: The bandage adhered to my skin and was difficult to remove. Variations: Adherence (noun) Adherent (adjective)
Aggregate Adjective: Total; amounting to a whole. Example: Aggregate sales were up for the holiday season. *it can also be used as a verb or a noun.
Cohere Verb: a) To stick together in a mass that resists separation, b) To be internally consistent and have logically linked parts. Ex: The essay cohered nicely around the central thesis. Variations: Cohesion (noun) Cohesive (adjective) Coherent (adjective)
Dissimulate Verb: To conceal feelings or intentions. Ex: He dissimulated his disappointment over not being elected class president, claiming he never really wanted the position. Variation: Dissimulation (noun)
Egregious Noun: Conspicuously bad or offensive. Ex: The student’s paper was filled with egregious misspellings and punctuation errors, and her teacher insisted that she revise it.
Ensemble Adjective: A whole unit or group composed of complementary or coordinated parts. Ex: An orchestra is an ensemble made up of many musicians and a variety of instruments.
Facsimile Noun: An exact copy or reproduction. Ex: The facsimile of the Declaration of Independence appeared on the inside cover of the history book.
Gregarious Adjective: Sociable; seeking and enjoying the company of others. Ex: Gregarious people often enjoy parties. Variation: Gregariousness (noun)
Inherent Adjective: Inborn, naturally a part of something; intrinsic. Ex: The photographer has an inherent ability to capture her subject’s emotions.
Semblance Noun: A very small amount; the barest trace. Ex: There wasn’t even a semblance of humor in that so-called comedy.
