18.4.1 • Sketch the general shapes of graphs of pH against volume for titrations involving strong and weak acids and bases, and explain their important features.
Strong Base and Strong Acid Titration • 25 cm3 of 0.1 M HCl titrated by 0.1 M NaOH • 25 cm3 of 0.1 M NaOH titrated by 0.1 M HCl
Important Features • Equivalence Point: the point where there are exactly the same number of moles of acid and base. • Equivalence point ≠ pH 7 • Buffer region: the region where there is little change to the pH in the solution that is being titrated • pKa = pH or pKb = pOH happens in the middle of the buffer region.
Weak Base and Weak Acid • 25 cm3 of 0.1 M CH3COH2 titrated by 0.1 M NaOH • 25 cm3 of 0.1 M NH3 titrated by 0.1 M HCl
Features of Equivalence Points • Strong base and strong acid titration • Equivalence point = 7 • Weak acid titrated by a strong base • Equivalence point > 7 • Weak base titrated by a strong acid • Equivalence point < 7
What Can Be Deduced From This Graph? pH Equivalence Point Volume of acid added (cm3)
