Research Program – Past, Present, Future • Research interest in PM has increased since 1977 from annually ~ 300 research articles to more than 1600 articles in 2006, the number of general PM articles is increasing similarly but started somewhat later, most importantly from 1995 onwards • PMI Research Department formed in 1997 • Topics: methodologies, mathematical modeling, data mining • Examples in 2005: • Exploring the role of the Executive Project Sponsor, interaction of personality type with project type, post project reviews to synthesize lessons learnt • Plans for 2006: • Complexity theory in PM, impact on PM trends in related disciplines, organizing for PMO success, HR management in the project-oriented organization, project management in China: establishing a national baseline
Component Learning and Sharing – Region 8 & 12 • Subdivision of audience into parallel working sessions on 3 topics • Define and offer membership values • Identify ways to obtain, maintain, enhance and manage attributes and factors affecting chapters’ sustainable growth • Identify means and ways to gain new members and keep existing members • Multicultural parallel working teams, good opportunity to share ideas and to learn from each others’ approaches to addressing issues in chapters • Team presentations, slides and flipcharts to be distributed by EMEA centre

Managing Expectations during Times of Change and Uncertainty • Presentation on expectation management under the influence of uncertainties, by Michael Flint Herman Gonzalez • Sources and respective impacts of change and uncertainties • Simplistic but effective framework for the recognition and incorporation of challenges and uncertainties in project-type situations • Team case studies on the successful implementation of change in certain selected real-life situations, with 4 individual team presentations
Advocacy and Outreach • PMI organization has strong focus on expansion in Europe and even more importantly, the Asia Pacific regions • PMI has spearheaded roundtable in China • PMI is currently planning a roundtable initiative in Europe (UK) • The SAC Circle initiative which was initiated in the previous year, has been rather successful • Fee-based membership of enterprises interested in furthering PM (e.g. IBM, SAP, …) • Further enterprises apparently interested in joining
Component Finance • Repeated presentation, original version dating back to Bangkok meeting • Introduction to the basic standards & policies in PMI component finance • No essential new findings for the PMIFC, but relevant for smaller chapters

Certification • Following some modifications to the passing score, the PMP program is now stable and running successfully • The CAPM program has remained unchanged, but shall in future be marketed more intensely • Currently developing a certification program on the basis of the new program management standard
Leadership Institute Meeting Networking Reception • Well organized reception, good opportunity to meet face to face and to talk to other leaders in the PMI community • Benefited from the opportunity to talk with Greg Balestrero, PMI CEO
Succession Planning and Board Transition • Identification of key issues and exchange of ideas in succession planning and board transition, presented by Alexandre Rodrigues • Key success factors (sources and key attributes of good candidates, timing, …) • Typical potential issues (timing lack of candidates, conflict of interest, …) • Identification and “growing” of good candidates • What (not) to incorporate in component by-laws • Lessons learnt and information exchange on best practices in successful succession planning and board transition

How to Use the Data Exchange Program (DEP) • Introduction to the Members Database • Compiled application for access database • Lot of reports available • Currently two versions available • Real-time updated database on the web: has limited reporting capabilities • Monthly updated access application available on the 10th of each month: “all you ever wanted to know about your members” • E.g. : people not in the chapter, but members of PMI • Component prospect list : non PMI members for mailing actions • Learned a few tricks • Important: Members should update their data regularly on http://www.pmi.org/members • Member data on PMIFC website is matched on a monthly basis with PMI data
Successful Communications • Presentation on core factors in successful and effective communication, in the context of projects management and PMI component leadership • Role of communication in PMI’s core purpose and PMI’s core values • 5 steps in effective communication : listen intensely, think clearly, discuss openly, develop sensitivity, respond quickly to needs • Role of communication in component leadership and community outreach • Exemplary process for the preparation of a communication plan : identify communication requirements, perform stakeholder analysis, identify communication technologies and methods, write communication plan, distribute information, integrate performance reporting, closure

Component Webinar Program • Presentation of the RiskSIG decision process and current status of implementation of Webinar programs • Decision to offer pre-recorded videos, not real-time sessions, with the respective related pro’s (downloadable at any time, anywhere) and con’s (no interaction) • Infrastructure and financial transaction processes adopted from FSSIG • Currently 2 Webinars on-line, both pre-recorded videos which are downloadable at a cost of US$ 20 of which 15% are transaction fees payable to FSSIG • Master agreement with selected speakers, currently no fees payable to speakers • Infrastructure and processes available to other parts of the PMI community • Webinars are of course available for interested audiences too • Triggered active discussion with the audience on specifics, and potentials

OPM3 Products Suite • Further development of the OPM3 product suite • Expected extension of the tool basis, developed with Det Norske Veritas • Future tools will be Web-based, ultimately enabling best practices benchmarking • Next steps : update on the basis of current PMBOK guide, harmonization with Program and Portfolio management standards • Further parallel initiatives in the OPM3 field • Currently 20 professionals enrolled in internal pilot certification program • Certification level “Assessor” to conduct exams, requires 2 days initial plus ongoing training, cost 5K US$ incl. software for one year • Certification level “Consultant” to advise companies, requires further 2 days initial plus ongoing training, cost 8K US$ incl. software for one year • To get or remain involved in the field of OPM3 assessment and consulting is hence becoming a rather expensive exercise
