  3. New York Date – August 1776 Location – New York City, NY Winner – Great Britain Generals – British – Howe; American – Washington Result – Continental Army lost control of NYC and suffered heavy casualties

  4. Trenton Date – December 26, 1776 Location – Trenton, NJ Winner – United States Generals – British – Hessians; American – Washington Result – Continental Army retained many soldiers that would have gone home

  5. Philadelphia Date – Spring 1777 Location – Philadelphia, PA Winner – Great Britain Generals – British – Howe; American – Washington Result – colonists lost control of Philadelphia, Washington and his troops were forced to retreat further south

  6. Saratoga Date – October 17, 1777 Location – Saratoga, NY Winner – United States Generals – British – Burgoyne; American – Gates Result – turning point; British troops remain on coast to avoid wilderness ambush; French begin to aid Continental Army
