  2. Legal Chain • Police attend the scene of death • “crime scene” while investigated • Police Surgeon / Forensic Medical Examiner attends scene. “Likely suicide” • Procurator Fiscal informed by Police • Sudden Death Unit for Highland Area Dingwall PF • Report sent to Crown Office in Edinburgh

Legal Chain Links • Police/ Prison Service ask FME/GP/ NHS to attend custodies for mental health assessments • “suicide risk” part of Police protocols. • The Police can inform Highland Council Social Work department about “vulnerable adults” e.g. mental health issues. • The “Police concerns” arrive in local NHS managers mail box for allocation to CMHT or GP • The Police cannot feedback to the NHS once a death has occurred. They can only speak to the Procurator Fiscal.

The broken legal information chain for NHS procedural reviews • Anonymised data by Crown Office • Crown Office Decision “This is suicide” takes 12 months • New Craig's need to know for official procedures • The “NHS” ( Belford / GPs) need to know for “informal reflection” • The NHS pathologist is the only common NHS agency in the chain.
