Cultural Universals: a value, norm, or other cultural trait that is found in every group. --ex: courtship, marriage, funerals, games, laws, music, myths, dance These activities are found in all cultures, but specific customs differ from culture to culture Cultural Universals
Cultural Lag: Ogburn’s term for human behavior lagging behind technological innovations all parts of culture change over time parts change at different time/paces typically material culture changes first, with nonmaterial culture lagging behind Example: 9-month school year Cultural Lag & Cultural Change
Cultural Diffusion: the spread of cultural characteristics from one group to another --ex: Paper from China to rest of world Cultural Leveling: the process by which cultures become similar to one another; especially refers to the process by which US culture is being exported and diffused into other nations --Eliminates differences between cultures --ex: McDonalds/Coke—almost anywhere Cultural diffusion & cultural leveling
