Shotgun Gauge A Preference In many parts of the world, certainly all over the US, hunting and target shooting activities have been popular for many years. This has also meant – and still does – that the type of firearms people buy will be looked at for use, for effectiveness and preference. A teenager, or woman, may have a different preference to, say, a mature male. Also, it depends on what one uses the firearm for. Someone that works in the security services may find it easier to use a Colt handgun, for example, whereas the skeet shooter will go for a specific shotgun. This, also, means that gauges will play a part in choices. The different gauges are named that way because of the different sizes of the projectiles fired per shot. In short: gauge is determined by the size of the ammunition, and the larger the bore diameter of the gun the smaller the gauge will be. This means that say, the 10 gauge shotgun will have a larger bore diameter than the 12, or the 16, then 20 and so on. Obviously, the different diameters make it possible for different users to acquire the one best used for their preferences and circumstances when they’re out there hunting birds or small animals – or enjoying skeet and other wing shoot activities. A lot depends on the best uses for the different types of shotguns on the market when the gun enthusiast such as the bird hunter or skeet or trap participant makes their choice. Simply going by the number of sales in general – and by how often they are used and preferred over others – the most popular gauge is the 12, followed by the 20, and then the 28. But, the 10 is not uncommon either.
All of these gauges are offered in different models whether you like the Model 37 Featherlight you can purchase from leading dealers, or the Deer Slayer, for example, or, for that matter, one from many other leading brand names. Shotgun users will always look at the activity they enjoy most. For example, the user that enjoys hunting ducks and geese often prefer the 10 and 12 gauges whereas hunting larger animals may require a different bore and gauge. The more experienced the hunter, the more easily he/she adapts to the specific hunts or sports activities and the best gauge for their purposes. Also, many enthusiasts buy their shotgun because of, say, versatility since few will only ever stick to one discipline, be that shooting at the range, practicing target shooting or – as many do – live prey. Experienced handlers and shooters will most likely recommend a good 12 gauge from the manufacturer or brand of one’s choice. It has been popular among hunters and shooters for many years, and even though recoil may be, for some, an issue, most learn how to deal with it and adjust accordingly. If you find, however, that it is a problem, then many would advise you to consider a good 20 gauge, for example. Looking, for example, at the different uses – and resulting popularity – of the 12 gauge, the following can be considered: There are different brands and models around, and depending on one’s choice the 12 gauge can be used for, say, home defense, or to hunt, or at the range. As a versatile hunting gun, for example, the 12 gauge is preferred by many over the 16 and 20 because it offers more power and will therefore bring down more game than others not as powerful. Fortunately for different users, the 12 gauge offers great versatility in terms of, say, the ammunition it can use – and the intended targets. Shotguns can shoot different ammunitions such as birdshot, buckshot and also slugs. This means the 12 gauge can be used by a great variety of hunters and other enthusiasts. Just as the 12 gauge is favored by some hunters and shooters, the same is obviously true for the others too – the 10, the 16, the 20 and 28 gauge.
