TIPS ON NOTE TAKING: GREEN - Don't write it down if you don't want. It is there for to read and make a mental note. BLUE - You should write this information down, but put it in your own words. Don't worry about coping it exactly. Put it in a way that you'll remember. BLACK - You need to write this down. It is important. If you can find a way to write it using less words that okay, but make sure you are getting this information in your notes. RED - This is very important and needs to be written in your notes EXACTLY as it is on the board.

The First Ming Emperor * Hongwu was rose from the military to be an emperor. * He distrusted scholar-officials because they didn't respect soldiers. * He revived Confucian values and the merit system for choosing officials.

Yongle’s New Capital * Yongle was Hongwu's son and he ruled with absolute power. * He rebuilt the Great Wall to prevent Mongol invasions. * He moved the capital from the southern city of Nanjing to Beijing in the north to return power to the North. * He built his capital city in the heart of Beijing. It became known as the Forbidden City.

The Tributary System * The Ming Dynasty's foreign policy was based on the tributary system. * Some tributary states in this system were Korea, Vietnam and Japan. * Every few years, these countries had to send diplomats to bring gifts to Beijing to show respect. * Diplomats had to show respect to Ming rulers by performing the kowtow.
