Vertical Structure and the Thermal Wind • Reading, Ch. 12 of N-G Online • Wallace and Hobbs 7.2.7
Where you heat matters • Impacts of heating on stability in trop vs. strat
Shear (note: not Sheer) • Two kinds of vertical shear • Examples (board) • Vertical shear of geostrophic wind has a special name _______________________
Thermal Wind Equation • Take vertical derivative of Vg, use hypsometric (see derivation in text) • The link between pressure/height/wind and temperature. • Doesn't “blow”, but if it did, it would with colder temperatures (smaller thicknesses) to left, and harder with more temperature contrast! • Explains a lot, like the existence of the polar jet!
Cold and Warm Core • Thought Experiment, Low center which gets more intense with height (stronger winds) • Multi Color Dry Erase • How about the reverse? • What is this example of?
