  2. Assistive or Adaptive Technology refers to, “Products, devices, or equipment, whether acquired commercially, modified or customized, that are used to maintain, increase or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.”

  3. 8 Helpful Assistive Technology Tools for your Classroom • Word Prediction • Screen Readers • Sip and Pull Systems • Video Magnifiers • Close Captioning and Subtitling • Word Talk • Supernova Access Suite • Face Mouse

Screen Readers are described by the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) as “software programs that allow blind or visually impaired users to read the text that is displayed on the computer screen with a speech synthesizer.” Word Prediction give students who struggle with writing and those who are not that great of spellers possible choice with just a few letters. There are a number of different word prediction applications available.

  5. FaceMouse Sip and Puff system helps students with mobility challenges such as paraplegics, to be able to control technology by using a device with their mouth.

  6. Close Captioning and Subtitling is used on both Mac and Windows. This gives deaf students the ability to follow along with classroom video material. Word Talk is a free add-in for Microsoft Word. It is a program that reads along with any document written in word and has the ability to be saved to a file.

  7. Supernova Access Suite is a complete screen reader. This can be downloaded from YourDolphin.com. They offer a free trial geared towards many different disabilities so students can see what best for them. Video Magnifiersthis is for students with low vision. Ulva offers a variety of styles for students

  8. Windows Vista Ease of Access Is a way to easily control assistive technology that is already built in.

  9. The Ease of Access Center Provides customized services that can help people see, hear, and use Windows Vistas computers easily.
