Christian responsibility for the environment begins with Acknowledgement of God as the source of all creation Appreciation for the goodness of creation The Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother celebrated their 125th anniversary in 2008 Care for God’s creation is a focus for the Congregation.

  9. Energy Awareness Program: What Can I Do? Removing 1 lamp from your office/area can save approximately 280 KWh of usage and $20 a year in electricity Turn your computer off when you leave at the end of your shift. Change your computer’s settings to utilize “sleep mode,” not screen saver Turn off lights when you leave for lunch or for the day If you use a private restroom, remember to turn off the lights.   10. The SJHS Green Team is committed to environmental stewardship, to a sustainable future, and to improving the social, economic and environmental well-being of the community. Through our actions, we hope to inspire others to adopt practices that reduce energy usage and waste, to create a cleaner and safer community. The purpose of this team is to develop strategies, procedures, policies and standards that will allow the Health System to achieve this mission.

Reduce • Reduction of packaging materials from vendors • Transition to more eco-friendly cleaning agents • Reduction of Styrofoam and plastic bottles • Energy conservation by turning off unattended computers and lights • Installation of automatic thermostats in public areas • Reduction of office paper, better utilization of electronic media

Reuse • Encourage use of re-usable plates, cups and utensils • Wash instead of dispose! • Reuse office paper for notes or for desktop use. • Print on front and back • Reuse office supply items and packing materials rubber bands, paper clips, bags • Collect unused medical supplies and designate for mission trips • Be creative! Don’t throw it away! • Find new ways to reuse materials

  20. Recycle • Cardboard is broken down and taken to the crusher • SJMC recycled 288,682 lbs of cardboard in 2009 • Confidential paper to shredder • SJMC recycled 288,692 lbs of paper in 2009 • 2,454 trees saved! • Newspaper, magazines, junk mail, envelopes • Crocs recycling program

PAPER REDUCTION / RECYCLING INITIATIVE • In the past fiscal year, > 80,000 reams of paper were ordered for SJMC. • 13 trees per day! • > 70% of this paper was recycled by SJMC • Our Goals • Utilize laptops/projectors for meetings/presentations • Send agendas and minutes via email • Limit handouts and unnecessary papers • If printing is necessary, print on front & back of paper • Don’t forget to recycle! • Staff to utilize phone and email for information exchange

  23. What’s Left … • SJMC contracted with COVANTA trash to energy plant. • What cannot be reused / recycled is burned & converted into steam for production of electricity

What Employees Are Doing… • Styrofoam reduction plan, eliminating most plastic beverage bottles sold here • “Lending library” available to all employees to recycle old books • Offer used coffee grounds to gardeners for their compost piles • Safely use leftover food in soups and salads, resulting in very minimal waste Linda / Dietary

  29. What are the Alternatives? • Recyclable plastics (#1 and #2) • Non-tree products: potato, bagasse, bulrush • Recycled paper (recyclable and compostable) • Cost 5 to 10 cents more than Styrofoam • Reusable eating utensils

Physical Therapy • We have replaced plastic spoons with much less expensive “stir sticks” for coffee. • Physical therapists repurpose various items like old phone books, duct taping them together to use for footrests and step-ups for patients • Send old forms and various other stuff to the Child Development Center for use in art projects Kelly
