Service-Learning • Service-learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students: 1) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified on- and off-campus community needs and 2) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility http://www.byui.edu/ServiceLearning/subpages/fgdefinition.htm
Relay for Life • a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. http://www.relayforlife.org/relay/whatisrelay
My Community Service • W.G. Nunn Bookfair: I worked the cash register and helped kids find the perfect book at W.G. Nunn Elementary School. • Adopt A Highway: I picked up trash to keep Patterson Street clean.
My Community Service • Flag Football for Hope: A flag football tournament to raise money for a young girl with cancer. • Blazer Raiser: A fundraiser to raise money for the VSU Tennis Team by auctioning off players to be a partner in a doubles tournament.
What I learned from Service-Learning • I discovered that only a little bit of your time can make a big difference in the community. A little effort can go a long way in helping someone’s life. Volunteering is one of the most important things you can do for your community. • I learned how to work with people and acquired good communication skills.
