Purpose • The National Institute for Urban School Improvement (NIUSI) develops powerful networks of urban local education agencies and schools that embrace and implement a data-based, continuous improvement approach for inclusive practices • NIUSI goals include: • a focus on Continuous Improvement • continued Research and Development • coherent and culturally responsive Professional Development • National Networking and Dissemination

NIUSI Goals • Increase knowledge and understanding through evaluation of our current practice, change efforts and impact. • Synthesize and expand research-based practices for inclusive urban schools, students and families.
NIUSI Goals • Leverage continued improvement of Inclusive Practices in Urban Schools through regional technical assistance plans, collaborative work with Leading Urban Districts focusing on Research Validated Practices in early intervention, reading, behavior, and Universal Design. • Engage national discourse in local, professional practice, and policy communities on improving educational outcomes for urban students.
What are Inclusive Urban Systems? Systems in which educators enlarge their perspectives to encompass ALL children by integrating curricular and teaching reforms, collaborating with ALL support personnel, aligning ALL policies, and assessing learning of ALL students in order to ensure that ALL students have access to opportunities to learn and achieve.
Systemic Change Framework • A common framework for understanding change work grounded in the system that we seek to change: public education • School systems are products of the communities and the families that live there • Family and community involvement are embedded activity at the district, school and professional levels
