Money Conversions: • Costa Rica uses the colon "₡" (named after Christopher Columbus). • Coins 1, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, 500 colones. • Bank notes 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000 colones. • $ 1 American dollar = 547 colones • 1 colon = less than $0.00182815 www.xe.com
Money Game Have students “purchase” items, practice paying for them, and convert their prices to U.S. dollars.
Money Conversion INFORMATION I learned Puerto Viejo charges ships for the time they are at the berth being loaded and unloaded. The length of the vessel determines the daily charge. A ship that is 200 meters long must pay $2,882 per day. PROBLEM How many colones would this be (to the nearest colon) ?
Money Conversion INFORMATION At Burger King, I order a Whopper (with cheese) Value Meal. The price is ¢1.850. PROBLEM • What is the equivalent in American dollars (rounded to the nearest cent) ? • Which Costa Rican bank notes and coins would you use to pay for your meal?
Measurement Conversion Problems INFORMATION A waterfall near La Fortuna, Costa Rica is an amazing sight. It only takes a 30 minute walk down a steep hillside to see it! The water falls a distance of 70 meters into a beautiful stream. GIVEN 1 meter is equivalent to 3.28 feet. PROBLEM How far does the water fall from top to bottom in feet?
Measurement Conversion Problems: INFORMATION In order to enjoy La Fortuna’s waterfall, visitors must HIKE a height of 600 meters along a narrow, SCARY trail. PROBLEMS • How far in feet does a visitor have to hike to reach the bottom of the waterfall? • What fraction of a mile is the round trip to the waterfall given that there are 5, 280 feet in a mile?
D = R(T) Problems: INFORMATION Spain is approximately 7, 651 kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean from the United States of America. PROBLEM If an airplane flies at approximately 500 miles per hour, how long will it take to get from the United States to Spain? Hint: You must change kilometers to miles first.
Expense Problem INFORMATION It costs 15 sterling pounds (£) per person to visit the Tower of London and see where the Royal Jewels are housed. PROBLEM If there are 19 people in our group and a 10% discount is given to large groups exceeding 15 persons, how much would it cost in American dollars to visit the Tower of London? Currently 1 British pound is equivalent to $1.60 in American dollars.
Time Line Problem INFORMATION London is 6 hours ahead of St. Louis time. It takes 9 hours to fly from St. Louis, MO to London. PROBLEM A. You leave St. Louis at 8 a.m. on Saturday. What day and time will it be in London when you arrive? B. Coming home you leave London at 1 p.m. on a Friday. What day/time will it be in St. Louis when you arrive?
