Who were the Anti-Federalists? • Feared a strong central government would endanger personal liberties • Distance too far from citizens • Feared “necessary and proper” allowed too much power
The Federalist Papers • John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, & James Madison • Pro Constitution papers / collection • Argued that the Constitution would protect EVERY citizen’s liberty • Spoke of the Spain, England and France threat!!!
Ratification • June 1788 -New Hampshire- 9th State • Needed NY and VA votes(40% of the POP) • December 15, 1790-All states ratified • Only now are we united under ONE NATION
What Took Place? • Washington and Franklin big supporters and they were popular! • Compromise-Federalists compromised added the Bill of Rights • The Federalists Papers really swung support for a strong central government
