Battelle Ultrasonic Liquid Level Monitor
This demonstration illustrates the “Corner Reflection” approach to tank level measurement via ultrasound. • The displays that follow contain plots derived from data collected while emptying a tank of water. • Two ultrasound sensors were used to generate the liquid level data. • Both sensors were mounted to the lower outside of the tank, one at a 60° angle from the horizontal, the other at a 45° • angle. 2
The upper section of each display portrays data from the 60° sensor The lower section of each display portrays data from the 45° sensor 3
The plots on the left-hand portion of each display portray the tank with: • The fill level shaded in • blue, • The sound zone from • the 60° sensor shaded • in green, and • The sound zone from • the 45° sensor shaded • in red. 4
The plots in the upper right-hand portion of each display show signal data from the 60° sensor. The plots in the lower right-hand portion of each display show signal data from the 45° sensor. 5
Actual ultrasound signals with the intersections of the sound zones and the wall of the tank highlighted. These zones are where strong “corner shots” will occur. 6
The correspondence between the colored shaded regions and the sections of the tank wall intersected by the sound zones. 7
Enlarged views of signals as they pass through sound zones (highlighted) on tank wall. 8
Note the strong “corner shot” signal that occurs when the fill level passes through the second sound zone along the tank wall. 9
The enlarged views of the signal emphasize the dramatic pulse from the “corner shot”. 10
