The Grand Empire • Composed of three parts • The French Empire • Inner core • Extended from the Rhine in the east and included the western ½ of Italy north of Rome • Dependent States • Kingdoms under the rule of Napoleon’s relatives • Spain, Holland, Kingdom of Italy, Swiss Republic, Grand Duchy of Warsaw, Confederation of the Rhine • Allied states • States defeated by Napoleon • Prussia, Austria, Russia and Sweden
A New Type of Military • Napoleon’s army, The Grande Armee, reshaped European warfare • Divided into units • Used Dispersion techniques • Highly organized • Very loyal • Used the element of surprise
Spreading the Principles of the Revolution • Within his empire, Napoleon’s sought to spread some of the principles of the French Revolution • Legal equality • Religious toleration • Economic freedom • Spread of French revolutionary principles = important factor in the development of liberal traditions in these countries
