WHY? • The movement came about because in the mid to late 1800s more and more designers saw more products becoming mass produced and saw that the quantity of the production was being prioritised over the the quality of the product. • They wanted to keep to workshop manufacture, ensuring the quality of the product was exceptional. • The pioneers of the movement believed in simple designs maintaining high quality.
Key Players • William Morris • effectively the founder of the movement. He started up a business that made furniture and upholstery by hand discarding the contemporary methods of mass production. • His ethos was to produce simple designs in natural forms. • A. W. Pugin (Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin) • His designs kick-started gothic revival which in turn influenced the Arts and Crafts Movement. • He worked on the Houses Of Parliament in London. • He died at the early age of 40, exhausted, after a mental collapse. • John Ruskin • His essays on art and architecture were influential on design in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
