  2. CSA History The CSA has been involved in conducting, analyzing and disseminating various socio-economic and demographic surveys The office has been serving as the official data source for the country. In addition to the annual, bi-annual and ad-hoc surveys, the CSA has conducted Three Population and Housing Censuses (in 1984 and 1994,2007) The Agricultural Census in 2002.

  3. Where We Were Before in terms of Data Archive?

  4. A Stand alone PC system was used until 2004 at the CSA and the resource sharing and efficient communication was a series problem. • Utilization of 1.44 MB floppy diskettes was considered the efficient means of transferring files or documents among professionals. • In addition, there was no any centralized management of the system which was hindering the data security and management system. • Little attention was given for meta data documentation • There was no integration between Micro data and meta data • Users dissatisfaction was prevalent

  5. THE NEED FOR IMPROVEMENT AND ADP’s INTERVENTION

  6. USERS / PRODUCERS NEEDS DATA PRODUCTION Planning, collection, cleaning, processing Quality Control DATA DISSEMINATION Publish Traditional Media, Multimedia, Web HARMONIZATION Standard formats, comparability, multilingual COLLABORATION Disseminate and share knowledge, user-producer dialog, feedback DATA ARCHIVING Conversion, Packaging, Confidentiality ACCESS metadata, data & documentation + research tools ANALYSIS Retrieve data for analysis Online Analysis Technical Support DATA MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK ICT UNIT IT CORE ARCHITECTURE DATA TOOLS PROJECT MANAGEMENT HARDWARE Server, Workstations, Laptops, CD/DVD, Scanners, Printers, Backup, Tools TELECOMS Intranet, Internet, Connectivity, LAN/WAN, Security SOFTWARE OS, DBMS, Development, Web, Multimedia, Office, Statistics, Security SPECIALIZED SOFTWARE AND GUIDELINES Toolkit, DevInfo,WinISIS, DDP, Nesstar, CSPro, XML, TRAINING Where did we start Data Management Framework

  8. Achievements • The ICT Department is now integrated part of the organization and has a well defined structure; • CSA staff has been trained in project management techniques, archiving and dissemination of microdata, advanced used of CSPro software, XML technologies, and basic scripting techniques; • A Central Databank has been established for the microdata and contains today over 5000 data and documentation files covering about 60 surveys;

  9. Achievements • CSA is able to disseminate its statistical information through its official website

  10. Achievements • CD-ROM products have been prepared and a CD based electronic dissemination system has been put in place

  11. Achievements • The EthioInfo database has been finalized and is available on CD-ROMs and online;

  12. Achievements • The ENADA system with its efficient cataloging system is set to be available on the internet (50 Surveys are loaded in this system)

  13. Achievements • Improved backup System • The network system set in place facilitates the back up system and these days the CSA is using HP-DL380 G5 • Tape drives and HP Ultrium data cartridge with a capacity of 400 GB

  14. Achievements • The price database has been developed and made available online

  15. FUTURE PLAN

  16. Future Plan • Improve the Dissemination System through Dynamic Web • Recovering old data available on old tapes and archiving in the central data bank using the IHSN toolkit • Harmonizing the data through proper standardization • Establishment of the Question bank • Finding an appropriate tool for annonimization • Implementing the NSDS
