  2. Paraphrase The song tells a tragic story. The woman breaks up with the man. He cannot recover from this and drinks to try to escape the pain of rejection. He finally overdoses on alcohol and is buried. The woman is consumed by guilt and tries to drink it away. She finally overdoses on alcohol and is buried beside him under a willow tree.

  3. Colour Coding Romantic language – to romanticize the tragedy Distancing language – to create distance from the tragedy Imagery – to create visuals, comparisons, contrasts, and allusions, helping with the romanticizing of the tragedy.

It feels very like Romeo and Juliet, especially since neither person can live without the other, yet they cannot live together. The theme: Unrequited love and guilt can drive a person to suicide.
