  2. What is a rivalry? • Appears when two or more countries, companies, or people compete over the same thing.

  3. What are some Sports Rivalries? • Yankees vs. Red Sox • USC vs. UCLA • Lakers vs. Clippers • Chargers vs. Raiders • Dodgers vs. Giants • Angels vs. Athletics • Angels vs. Dodgers

  4. Rivalries can occur between friends or siblings.

  5. The Conflict Started because of the rivalry between Egypt and Nubia. • Shared the same border • Nubia was located to the South of Egypt. • Competed over the resources of the area. • Nubia had more farmlands • Egypt controlled Nubia from 2000 B.C. -1000B.C.

  6. Cultural Diffusion • When two cultures share and borrow each others ideas. • Same type of government • Monarchy – King rules • Art and architecture • Worshipped some of the same gods • Hieroglyphics

  7. Rise of the Kush Kingdom (Nubia) • 1650 B.C. Nubia gains independence from Egypt. • Kush Kingdom located in Upper Nubia.

  8. At the same time • Egypt’s power declining • at the end of the old kingdom, rival kings fight over power. • Kush Ally with the Hyksos • join sides against Egypt

  9. Egypt goes to war with alliance • Hyksos pushed out • Egypt turns south and captures Kush and the city of Kerma • Punish Kush for alliance • Egypt claims much of Nubia • build cities and temples • rule for 550 years • encourage Nubians to become like Egyptians

  10. Another Rise of Nubia • Conquered most of Egypt in 700 B.C. • Established the city of Napata as a capital. • Major Trade City for the Kush civilization. • gold • Salt • Spices • Elephants • Rhino Horns
