Questions to think about… • How would you describe the importance of accuracy and precision in experimentation? • How is precision connected to experimental limitation?
How to make an appropriate measurement • Determine the scale increment • Use the graduations (or marks) to find all certain digits • Estimate the uncertain digit, which is always one place further than the graduations • i.e. If the graduations mark every 10 millimeters, they the uncertain digit with be the ones place. Decimals may not be recorded…they go beyond the precision level of the instrument
A little side note… • Why must volume measurements be made at eye level?
Example Scale increment? Certain digits? Uncertain digit.
Example Scale increment? Certain digits? Uncertain digit.
Example Scale increment? Certain digits? Uncertain digit.
Let’s Revisit… • How would you describe the importance of accuracy and precision in experimentation? • How is precision connected to experimental limitation?
Conclusion… • Taking proper measurements is imperative to reflecting the correct significant figures in calculations from data gathered in laboratory.
A Few Final Notes… • Graduated cylinders deliver approximate volumes. • More accurate volumes/masses are obtained by making an initial and final reading and calculating the measurement by difference.
