Project Origins • Statewide focus groups evaluating Navigation 101 and the needs of first- generation and underrepresented students • Cross-function analysis of Navigation 101, Career Guidance Washington, Sparking the Future and the needs of the first-generation and underrepresented student • Multi-level development during the summer of 2012 • Change Systems for Educators writing team with college admissions staff, direct college access service providers staff, principals, counselors • OSPI Review team
Project Rationale/Research • Providing first-generation students with strong self-advocacy skills • lessens their stress and increases their ability to access • critical college-going information. • Students that understand the building blocks of self-advocacy • experience greater academic satisfaction, higher grades, and • have an increased level of ability to succeed in college and life. • (Astramovich, R. & Harris, K.. 2007, Downing, S., 2008), Engle, J. & Tinto, V. 2008).
Embedded Concepts • Habits of the Mind: • Provide a framework and common language for students, teachers, school leadership, parents and the wider school community to share when discussing and planning for the development of student thinking. • Common Core Standards: • Provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. • Are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.
