Idea conceived in 1999 • First service started with humble beginnings in 2004 • 1 Auckland store • 6 trial days • Lessons learnt the hard way, never to be repeated
Today • Over 50 Resene ColorShops nationwide accept PaintWise returns • Plus the PaintWise service calls on council facilities • Plus provides a paint recovery programme for other companies
The key lessons? • Service must be convenient! • For us that means… • Available in all our key stores nationwide • Whenever they are open • Customers can bring back paint when it suits them – not to fit our timetable • Any brand so they can deal with all their paint at once
If you make it easy to do the right thing many people will • The path of least resistance is strong… People will not go far out of their way to recycle • No-one wants to pay the cost
So who pays? • Resene PaintWise is part of a charitable trust – The Resene Foundation • Funded by • Levies collected from retail sales of paints • Levies for non Resene paints returned • Resene
A charge to return products acts as a disincentive • Resene charges a levy upfront on purchases • No charges to Resene retail paint returns at time of return • Legacy of Resene paint in garages prior to the service starting can be returned free
Key successes • Has diverted over 1 million packs from landfill • Over 50,000 litres of recycled paint provided free to cover graffiti all over NZ • Community paint donated free from selected stores to community projects • Over 200,000kg of steel recycled
Key successes • The only nationwide paint and paint packaging recovery programme to stand the test of time • Others have come and gone • Turns 9 this year! • Accredited by the Ministry for the Environment
What happens to the paint received? • Blended together to create 100% recycled paint provided free to cover graffiti • Good quality Resene paint donated to community groups and activities • Solventborne paint sent to solvent recovery • Recovered solvents are reused in other industries • Other waterborne paint used in construction materials
What happens to the packaging received? • Metal packaging – recycled • Plastic packaging is chipped and washed and made back into Resene plastic pails using 100% recycled post consumer content • World first with a custom built plant developed in Auckland to enable this
Effects on the community/others • Moved the burden from councils and ratepayers to paint users • Auckland Hazmobile used to accept paint returns • Phased out over a period of time with paint returns all redirected to PaintWise
Effects on the community/others • Large volumes of paint available to community groups • Has led to significant reduction in graffiti in areas such as Porirua where they have undertaken a sustained programme to cover graffiti promptly
Education is important too • Also includes an education element • Only buy what you need • Use up all your paint • Store paint so it lasts • Reuse packaging materials
Education is important too • Also includes an education element • Recycle the empty container • Donate to charity • Buy good quality paint that will last • Save unnecessary washing up
Leading the way into the future • Teaching others how to take care of paint wastes • Resene Eco.Decoratorprogramme • Focused on professional contractors running their business in a sustainable manner • PaintWise • WashWise • Sustainable principles
Leading the way into the future • Looking at more uses for the waste products to use them in the best way possible • Encourage more councils to choose recycling over landfilling • Typically it is ‘cheaper’ to landfill but not if you take all costs into account
Product stewardship for us is a team effort • Resene initiative with support from • Ministry for the Environment • Many councils • 3R, our operations partner • Plus most Resene staff are involved in the programme through our stores
We need you on the PaintWise team • When you’re next decorating, remember to be PaintWise with your paint! • When you’re next making decisions on paint disposal, think PaintWise!
