WILSON BADEJO FOUNDATION (WBF) 5TH ANNUAL LECTURE 2012
WELCOME TO WBF ANNUAL LECTURE 2012 SECERETARY REPORT 5TH ANNUAL LECTURE WBF
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • This lecture rounds up activities marking the 65th birthday anniversary of The Reverend Dr. Wilson Badejo, Founder and Chairman of WBF. • The activities started with a press conference addressed by Dr. Badejo some days ago on the 19th of this month. • We are here today not for grandiose celebration but for a sober reflection on the lot of the downtrodden in our midst.
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • Our aim has been to create awareness, particularly in government and corporate circles on the need to put the issues of the less privileged on the front burner. Their continued utter neglect poses grave danger. • The Founder’s concern for the less privileged, under guidance of the Holy Spirit, led him to mobilize like minds under the WBF umbrella to fulfill a God-given mission.
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • The Wilson Badejo Foundation is a non-religious, non-profit, non-governmental organization with mandate to: • Bring the less privileged in the society into the mainstream of the national economy. • Give succor to those Nigerians who, for reason of poverty, go to bed hungry night after night. • Our aim has been to create awareness, particularly in government and corporate circles on the need to put the issues of the less privileged on the front burner. Their continued utter neglect poses grave danger. • The Founder’s concern for the less privileged, under guidance of the Holy Spirit, led him to mobilize like minds under the WBF umbrella to fulfill a God-given mission.
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • Empower the physically and psychologically disabled to earn a living and meet their basic needs of life by their own efforts. • In the past one year the Wilson Badejo Foundation has continued activities in pursuit of sacred mandate. Given the severely limited resources available to the Foundation, scale of these activities can only be symbolic and catalytic. • At least 15 (fifteen) indigent undergraduates in various institutions of higher learning were offered scholarships. A good number enjoyed the same benefit to see them through at the Life Theological Seminary in Ikorodu, Lagos.
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • The Foundation has also intervened in the payment of school fees to no fewer than 20 indigent students in various secular and theological institutions across the country. The scholarship awards should be formally announced today later in the programme. • The WBF has not restricted its activities to education alone. In the medical field several indigent sick people were received either free medical evaluation or assistance in payment of hospital bills or both.
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • In the neighbourhood where the Foundation is located, hygienic portable water is provided free, courtesy of WBF, to residents who otherwise have no access to same • Recently we have had to extend the scope of our activities to conflict resolution. The Foundation successfully intervened in perennial coashes between two rival groups of street urchins (area boys) in the Fadeyi area of Lagos. Some of them actually
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • gave their lives to Christ. The Foundation had to acquire a centre in the area to disciple them. • Going forward, subject to availability of resources, the Foundation intends to equip them mentally, morally, manually, materially and financially so they can use their hands to build a future for themselves rather than channel their energy to negative activities.
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • The theme for this year’s event is NIGERIA’S GREAT RESOURCES AND THE PARADOX OF ECONOMIC POVERTY. We have chosen this theme against the backdrop of widespread poverty in the land in spite of tremendous national resource endowment. Increased youth restiveness and even insurgency have become rampant in the country consequent upon the high rate of unemployment among this vibrant but neglected segment.
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • As a non-governmental organization we have chosen to bring to bear our experiences, both spiritually and otherwise, on the resolution of the challenge of abject poverty in the midst of plenty • We thankfully acknowledge and appreciate all the individuals and corporate organization who have partnered with us in these efforts. .
WBF ANNUAL LECRURE 2012 • We call for more partners and increased support from existing partners. We can achieve only what you enable us to achieve • THANKS AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
