Roy Bishop Canfield, MD 1869-1932 • Grew up in Ann Arbor • Trained at University of Michigan (1887), Department Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat, University of Michigan, Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Berlin, Germany, Manhatten Eye and Ear, New York City Clinic for Laryngeal Tuberculosis, named Professor of the Department of Otolaryngology • Died in an auto accident returning from a house call in Detroit Canfield with daughter. A foundling on whom he did a mastoidectomy. He and his wife adopted her and renamed her Barbara.

Furstenburg, MD 1890-1969 • 1917- named assistant professor and with Canfield carved a special place for Otolaryngology in medical treatment of human disease • University of Michigan as Canfield was involved with WWI • Instrumental in making Otolaryngology a separate specialty from Surgery and Ophthalmology • Trained residents • Encouraged basic and clinical research • 1927- named associate professor. • Teaching residents • Radical surgery for cancer • Treating Meniere’s disease • Pituitary surgery • 1932- Chairman of Otolaryngology department after Canfield died • 1935- 1958- Dean of the Medical School • Research institution • Increased medical school enrollment • Building projects

  6. Bruce Proctor, MD 1914-1992 • Born in Detroit • University of Chicago • A wide ranging practice in Detroit and Windsor • Interested in the ear • Classic article on the internal membranes of the middle ear that I read as a resident • Acoustic neuroma surgery

Schuknect, MD 1917-1996 • Background • Born in South Dakota • Trained at the University of Chicago • Decorated in WWII for heroism in saving a pilot from a burning plane • Henry Ford Hospital • Professor and chair at Harvard • Writings • Maxillectomy- a classic surgical paper • Massive research effort on anatomy and function of inner ear • Otosclerosis • Cupulolithiasis • HFS drape
