  1. Progression in Addition Information Evening for Parents Heatherside Junior SchoolHeatherside Junior School Information Evening for Parents

  2. What are the key skills? • Knowing the value of digits. • Counting on and back. • Knowledge of number bonds to and within 10 and 20, extending to hundreds and decimals. • Adding multiples of 10, 100 • Partitioning and recombining numbers • Understanding that addition and subtraction are inverse operations. • Doubling and rounding. Heatherside Junior School

  3. The language of addition. How many different words can you think of that mean you have to add? Here are some… …we also use ‘difference’ which can be calculated by adding on or subtracting. Heatherside Junior School

  4. Addition at Reception and KS1 Using real life contexts, objects and pictures, e.g. There are 3 green cars and 2 red cars. How many cars in total? This then moves to formal notation i.e. 3+2 = 5 Heatherside Junior School

  5. Using structured number lines This method introduces a written method…instead of just fingers! 3+5 = ? Heatherside Junior School

  6. Partition one number Partition the smaller number (12) 23 + 10 + 2 23 + 10 = 33 33 + 2 = 35 Partition both numbers 20 + 10 + 3 + 2 20 + 10 = 30 3 + 2 = 5 30 + 5 = 35 Partitioning to support addition.23 + 12 = We often use this strategy when adding mentally Heatherside Junior School

  7. 25 + 17 = ? Moving on to an empty number line An understanding of how to partition is important here Heatherside Junior School

  8. Children are encouraged to “jump” to the nearest 10 or count on in multiples of 10. Extending to using an empty number line Heatherside Junior School

  9. Moving to formal, written methods 358 + 73 11 120 300 431 Add the units 8+3 = 11 Add the tens50+ 70 = 120 Add the hundreds 300 +0 = 300 Calculate the total 11+120+300 Heatherside Junior School

  10. Short column method, including regrouping 27 57+ We know that we are going to cross the tens boundary in this sum and this will mean we have to “carry” into the tens column. This is where children sometimes make mistakes and why their understanding of the value of digits is so important. Heatherside Junior School

  11. Progression through the school • Methods remain the same but the context and numbers become harder! • Moving to decimals and 4 and 5 digit addition. • Adding more numbers together. • Mental calculation strategies used alongside written methods. Heatherside Junior School

  12. In a gymnastics competition Lizzie scored 12.6 on vault, 11.9 on bars, 12 on beam and 12.9 on floor. What is her total score? Solving problems that have a real life context is a key part of the curriculum (and life!) When solving problems involving money and measure, children need to use column addition carefully; place value is extremely important. Heatherside Junior School
