2014 FCC-FHI objective B.Goddard 4/3/14
Next ~year deadlines and deliverables • Organisational: • Sort out the international “expressions of interest”, open until end May 2014 • Definition of “global collaboration” in September 2014 • Technical • Description and comparison of options with relative merits/cost, for FCC Workshop 23-27th March 2015 • Converge to common baseline with small number of options • To be formalised in Review in June 2015
Technical deliverables • Aim to narrow options to 1-2 by March 2015 • Clearly need to identify and focus on the items critical for feasibility AND cost (as cost will eventually also be a criterion) • Key topics to establish for each of our HEB options
What do we need for March 2015? • Coherent overall concept for each option • Basic parameters for each option • Identification and evaluation of key feasibility issues (KFI) • Main system technology concepts • Inventory and basic parameters for main systems • Power consumption estimates • Cost scaling methodology • Infrastructure, accelerator systems
Getting moving….I • Magnets • Refine magnet parameter tables for each option • Reuse of LHC • modified LHC lattice: copy P6 to P1, remove low betas everywhere else. • new table of circuits, to define convertor limits and check ramp ramps. • new optics, to allow collective effect evaluation • end-points of geometry for TLs • Considerations of completely new machine in LHC tunnel • Magnet parameters, layout • SPS tunnel option • Magnets, ramp rate, extraction, TLs, integration, filling time, ...
Getting moving….II • HH Collider tunnel option • Evaluate possible collective effects at 450 GeV • define magnet characteristics (2-in-one, polarity flip, aperture, ...) • build first simple lattice, iteration on collective effects • Document previous work • SSC, HE-LHC, … • Constraints from beam transfer for layout
Getting moving….III • Answers on key questions from FCC • Injection energy: 3.2 TeV for sure? • Use of HEB for Fixed Target beams (PoT/y??) • Transfer lines and overall machine/complex layouts • Define maximum slope (with SC TL magnets?) and bending radius, also insertion length for HH collider injection
