  3. HISTORY OF MSMC MSMC is a nationally recognized, liberal-arts institution with an intimate learning environment that extends beyond the classroom. By fostering the development of young leaders, students gain the skills to better themselves, their communities and the world.

  6. Nursing Programs at the Mount • THREE NURSING PROGRAMS • DOHENY • Associate Degree in Nursing – 2 to 3 years • Classes in evening (afternoon trial basis), clinical on weekends, 12-hr days • Overall GPA of 2.5 or greater • Science GPA of 2.5 or greater Starts in Fall and Spring of each year

  7. Nursing Programs at the Mount Chalon Campus Traditional BSN Day Program – 3-4 years Classes and Clinicals during daytime hours • 32 prerequisite units • Overall GPA of 2.7 or greater • Science GPA of 2.5 • RN-BSN program • Starts Fall of each year

  8. Nursing Programs at the Mount Doheny Campus • Accelerated BSN Program – 12 months • Must have a Bachelors Degree • 46 units of pre-requisite courses • Overall GPA of 3.0 or greater • Starts Summer and Fall of each year

  11. Evening and Weekend Program CA Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) Approved Adults who want to pursue a career in nursing Classes - Monday to Thursdays evenings Afternoon classes option on a trial basis. Hospital experiences are on weekends, usually Sat/Sun, but may include Fridays

  12. Two options available • Pre- Nursing Option (2.5 - 3 years) • Take GE courses in first semester(s) • Start nursing courses after completing GE courses • Nursing Option (2-2 1/2 years) • Transfer all GE courses, start nursing program

  13. Evening/Weekend Program: • FULL-TIME: • Rigorous • Intense • Prior to admission must plan for • Time management • Consistent support system • Course load: 8 to 13 units/semester; • A minimum of 6 units to qualify for financial aid.

  14. ADN Curriculum Plan Total program: ten, 8-week sessions A total of 80 units required As outlined in the college catalog

  15. What is the schedule like? • Two 8-week sessions/semester • 8-week summer session • Fall semester -late August to December • Spring semester -January to May • Summer session- mid-May to mid-July.

Class Schedule of Hours • Classes: • Evenings -> Mon – Thurs, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.; • Afternoon -> Mon – Thurs, 12:30-4:30pm, (trial basis). • Each course meets 1-2 times per week. • Clinical experiences: • Saturdays/Sundays, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. • Occasionally on Fridays, depending on course.

  17. Medication Math Calculation Exam • 100% required EVERY nursing course with a clinical • 2 chances allowed • If failed, the course must be dropped. • This will delay the completion date of the program.

LVN Mobility Option Degree Option: • Must complete 36 units of GE requirements • Must notify the program in writing of intent to challenge for credit with the NLN exam. • Pass NLN Mobility Test to receive 15 units of nursing credits for Med.-Surg Nursing PRIORto starting the program • Cost: is $80 (subject to change).

  19. 30 Unit Option - LVNs Non-Degree Option: • Allows NCLEX-RN exam after completing 28 units of required courses. • NOTE: • May not be endorsed by other states • May limit opportunities for career advancement • Does not receive a degree from MSMC

  20. Clinical Requirements Nursing = an educational program Which includes a clinical component, i.e., “hands on” requirement Cultural competence An appreciation for the common good

  21. Clinical Site Assignment Carpooling is strongly encouraged A reliable car is amust to get to the hospital. Proximity from home to clinical site, although considered, is not a priority in assignments. The responsibilities simulate employment. No make-up for absenteeism, which may result in withdrawing from course and may alter graduation date.

  23. RANDOM DRUG TESTING Clinical facilities may require random drug testing of students Failure to comply or a positive will result in exclusion from clinical Exclusion from clinical results in failure or withdrawal from the program

  26. Health Clearance • Students are responsible for insure that the their records are annually updated: • Physical exam, lab work • TB testing—2-step • Titers & immunizations: Hepatitis B, Varicella & MMR • Malpractice Insurance • CPR

  27. BACKGROUND CHECK Mandatory prior to clinical placement 1st semester: process will be coordinated by the program Any concerns must addressed BEFOREbeginning the program.

  28. Denial Of Licensureper BRN Policy • For crimes/acts which are related nursing qualifications, functions, or duties: • sex crimes • drug crimes • crimes of violence • Examples: child abuse, sex offender, assault/battery, dangerous drugs or devices

  30. Which courses transfer? • Transfer maximum: • 36 units of equivalent courses, with a GPA 2.5 • Once admitted into program • no credits can be transferred from outside institutions. • “In Progress” courses must be noted on application • Final official transcript(s) is required.

GE Requirements (as noted in the catalog) • Chemistry w/lab * • Human Anatomy w/lab * • Human Physiology w/lab * • Microbiology w/lab * • Oral Communication (Public Speaking or Speech) • Written Communication (English 101 or 1A) • General Psychology * 5 year recency requirement on courses, prior to entry of program.

GE Requirements(as noted in catalog) • Lifespan Developmental Psychology • Philosophy- Critical Thinking • Introductory Sociology • General Studies Elective (GSIII) (History or Art/Music Appreciation or Political Science or Literature) **Please note that all of the required GE requirements must be completed before being considered as a Direct-to-Nursing candidate. **

Religious Studies Requirement RST 41-Biomedical Issues & Christian Ethics • Religion or ethics courses offered through • Philosophy • History or • Literature departments will not meetthe requirement This is the only course that can be taken concurrently with the program and will happen no later than the first academic year in the nursing program.

APPLICATION PROCESS • Application Fee: • $20-online application • Complete application • Personal statement • Two references (academic and professional) • Official college transcripts (from every college attended) • 2.5 minimum overall GPA • 2.5 minimum science GPA • High school transcripts (only needed if you have less than 15 transferable, college units)

On-line Application • www.msmc.la.edu • Click on Admissions • Click on Nursing Transfer Students • Click Apply On-line • Select the program specific application • Reference forms can be printed from the application menu and mailed in to us. • We only accept online applications, however a PDF of the application is available. If you submit the application PDF, the application fee is $40.

Check your application status • WebAdvisor • A few days after you submit your application, you will get an email about WebAdvisor • 2 to 3 weeks after your application is received, you will be able to set up an account • Directions for setting up your account may be obtained on the nursing transfer student page • click on “check your application status” Please note: we receive a lot of documents 2 weeks before and after the deadline, so it takes longer during that time for items to be reflected in WebAdvisor.

Transcripts • We will need official transcripts from all the colleges that you have attended, including: • Any Community College attended • Any University/ 4-year college attended • Foreign transcripts from study-abroad program • Official Transcripts from all foreign study • Transcripts from Graduate or Professional degree • Transcripts from vocational program i.e. LVN,C.N.A, Phlebotomy, E.M.T • Transcripts for all courses completed by the deadline

FOREIGN STUDENTS If you attended college outside the United States, we will need the following items: • Official, sealed, international transcripts • An official, detailed international evaluation of your foreign coursework The evaluation company that we recommend is Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute.
