Run-ons and Comma Splices • Occur when there is a close relationship between two sentences.
Run-ons • A run-on is two simple sentences incorrectly joined with no coordinating conjunction(FANBOYS) and no comma. • Example: My roommate wants to win the Tour de France someday he spends hours riding his bicycle.
Comma Splices • A comma splice is two simple sentences incorrectly joined with a comma but no coordinating conjunction. • Example: My roommate wants to win the Tour de France someday, he spends hours riding his bicycle.
Two ways to fix these errors • Add (or keep) the comma and add a coordinating conjunction. • Example: My roommate wants to win the Tour de France someday, so he spends hours riding his bicycle. • Separate the sentences with a period. • Example: My roommate wants to win the Tour de France someday. He spends hours riding his bicycle.
