Vocabulary • Audit: to evaluate something to make sure it is true and correct. • Stagflation: a period of slow economic growth and high employment (stagnation) while prices rise (inflation). • Yom Kippur: Israel's most solemn holy day since it was exclusively concerned with atoning for the sin of the people. • Impeach: when an eleceted official is charged with unlawful activities which may lead to removal from office. • OPEC: Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Formed to agree on common policy for production and sale of oil.
“Law and Order” • Had FBI illegally wiretap protest leaders • Had CIA compile files on all American protesters. • Had the IRS audit all antiwar and civil rights activists. • Created an “enemies list”
Nixon and Civil Rights • Nixon was against integration of schools and slows it down. • Nixon was against bussing kids from far away neighborhoods, in order to integrate a school. • He was trying to win over southern white voters for the next election.
Nixon and the economy • Stagflation – See Vocabulary list. high inflation and high unemployment. (Stagflation is considered the second worst economic situation)
Nixon and the Economy • OPEC – (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) • All countries making up OPEC are in the middle east. • They produce the majority of the oil. • This is where America gets most of its oil from, even today.
Nixon and the economy • In the 1960s OPEC slowly raised the prices of oil. • Then in 1973, the Yom Kippur War broke out, with Israel against Egypt and Syria. • The United States sent massive military aid to Israel.
Gas Shortage 1973 • OPEC cuts off all oil, because America is sending money and weapons to Israel during the Yom Kippur War.
Nixon and Communism • Nixon wants to calm Cold War Tension • Ping Pong Diplomacy • Nixon visits China • Nixon visits Moscow, Russia • SALT I Treaty – Freezes the number of ICBMs each country has.
WATERGATE • Nixon had a g-d complex • Nixon’s advisors were: • H. R. Haldeman – Chief of Staff • John Ehrlichman – Chief Domestic Advisor 3. John Mitchell – Former Attorney General These men also believed that the president should have all the power.
Watergate • At 2:30 A.M., June 17, 1972, a guard at the Watergate complex in Washington, D.C., caught five men breaking into the campaign headquarters of the DNC.
Watergate • The burglars planned to photograph documents outlining Democratic Party strategy and to place wiretaps. • The leader, James McCord, was a former CIA agent • Now a former security guard for CRP (committee to re-elect the President) • The director of CRP was John Mitchell!!
The Cover up Begins • Workers shredded all incriminating documents in Haldeman’s office. • The White House, with President Nixon’s consent, asked the CIA to urge the FBI to stop its investigations into the burglary. • In addition, the CRP passed out nearly $450,000 to the Watergate burglars to buy their silence.
Things fall apart • A few days before sentencing, James McCord sends a letter to the judge saying that he had lied under oath and… • He also hinted that powerful members of the Nixon administration had been involved in the break-in. • Haldeman and Ehrlichman quickly resign.
Things get worse • Special Senate committee created to investigate the scandal. • John Dean, the President’s counsel, claimed the president was deeply involved in the cover-up. • The White House denies all of Dean’s claims
The Tapes • Presidential aide, Alexander Butterfield, revealed that Nixon had taped virtually all of his presidential conversations. • A year long battle over the tapes begins. • Nixon refused to give up tapes even after the court orders him to give them up.
The Vice President • The Vice-President, Spiro Agnew, is forced to resign because he took bribes when he was a Governor. • Gerald Ford is sworn in as Vice-President
The Tapes • Finally, Nixon releases 1,254 pages of edited transcripts of White House conversations about Watergate. • The Senate committee demands the unedited version. • Nixon refused, but the supreme court decided he had to.
The End • Nixon declares at a press conference, “ I am not a crook” • House of Representatives decides to start impeachment process. • Nixon gives up tapes, many have erased sections
The End • One tape was missing 18 ½ minutes. • On August 8, 1974, Nixon resigns. • Never admits guilt. • Gerald Ford is sworn in as President. • 25 members of Nixon’s administration serve jail time.
Roe vs. Wade • Roe v. Wade held that a mother may abort her pregnancy for any reason, up until the "point at which the fetus becomes ‘viable.’” • Viability is usually placed at about seven months (28 weeks).
