  3. Birth • December 21, 1879 in Gori, Russia • Birth name was IosifVissarionovichDjugashvili • Mother: peasant Father: cobbler. Both were illiterate • Smallpox when he was six.

  4. Childhood/Education • Beat by father. • Attended religious school. • Went to Orthodox church. • Bright student. • Received scholarship at Tbilisi (in Georgian Republic) • Turned to Lenin’s ideology after going to a seminary

  5. After Childhood • Became active revolutionist • Arrested eight times. Escaped seven • Adopted “Stalin” while in prison • Stalin joined up with Lenin

  6. Bolshevik Revolution • Started after WWI • Invaded and took over the Russian Government • Lenin was made Government leader • Rose to power during Bolshevik revolution.
