Oil • State of Matter ~ Liquid
Oil • Uses ~ Oil is used to make the gasoline we put in our cars today. It is also used to make diesel fuel. • All petroleum based products are made from what we know as oil too. • We get our plastics and lubricating oil from crude oil as well
Oil • How it is used ~ Oil is refined and purified. At this point it is made into many different products. How it is obtained ~ Oil must be drilled for and collected. It also needs to be shipped from one place to another http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26AN1LfbUPc Watch this video to see how it is drilled, shipped and refined
How it is formed(both oil and natural gas) Oil and Natural Gas Formation Oil and natural gas result from the decay of tiny marine organisms that accumulated on the bottom of the ocean millions of years ago. After these remains were buried by sediments, they were heated until they became complex energy-rich carbon-based molecules. Over time, the molecules migrated into the porous rocks that now contain them. Much of the oil and natural gas in the United States is located in Alaska, Texas, California, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Oil • Amount of air pollution ~ The pollution formed is not as bad as coal, but still is the major cause of pollution in many cities • Oil refineries, and cars put large amounts of pollutants in the air
Oil • Environmental Impacts • Drilling for oil ruins the land • Oil spills can ruin the soil and the water, depending on where it is spilled • Burning oil ruins the air quality
Oil • Other information ~ because wehave a very limited supply (50-75 years) at the current rate, we may run out soon. • Also because there is so little left, wars are being fought over the small amount.
