  1. BJD-INDIA: NAN 2006 BELONGED TO MEASURING THE BURDEN OF MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS. BJD ANNUAL WORLD NETWORK CONFERENCE NOVEMBER 3-4,2006, DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA TWO MAJOR PROJECTS THAT WERE COMPLETED IN THE YEAR WERE:- ‘Urban surveys for MSK, using the WHO-ILAR COPCORD (community oriented program for control of rheumatic diseases) Bhigwan Model, were completed in Pune, Jammu & Chennai’ . Data presented in several conferences - ACR 2005, BJD WORLD NETWORK CONFERENCE 2005, APLAR 2006 AND SEVERAL BJD INDIA NAN CME. The Delhi and Kolkata surveys are ongoing. 272 children suffering from Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) were evaluated in detail to validate the recent ILAR classification criteria. This data was presented at the APLAR Congress 2006. • Dr. Arvind Chopra SPOKE ON ‘Fulfilling the BJD Aspirations in Developing Countries – Lessons from WHO ILAR COPCORD Bhigwan (India) Model’ at the BJD Annual World Network Conference 2005. • Mr. P C Nahar, Chairman, Mission Arthritis India (a patient support group) SPOKE ON THE INDIAN experience at the ‘BJD International Patient Advocacy Meeting: Putting People First’ OCT 2005. • In unique meetings of European Union ‘Herbal Committee’ (May 06, London) and CSIR India-US FDA driven International meeting on medicinal botanicals (Aug 06, Oxford, USA), Dr Arvind Chopra, Secretary, BJD India, and the official representative of Govt of India while talking on Ayurvedic medicinal system and arthritis, described the opportunity offered by the BJD to improve the bone and joint health of the World. LINKS Patient Awareness, Education and Empowerment are components of the ongoing BJD India Population Surveys. Several focused Sessions were held in the Activity Week 2005. ‘Meet The Patient’ and free of cost Medical Camps continued as special events. Dr. Hans Rasker (The Netherlands) and Dr. Ross Petty (Canada) actively participated in special medical camps held in Pune region to provide free diagnosis, therapy guidance and health education. • IN 2007 • CREATE A NATIONAL DATABASE ON MUSCULOSKELETAL DISORDERS. Indian Council Medical Research, the apex research body in India, organized a task force on rheumatic musculoskeletal disorders and osteoporosis- several BJD India members were invited to join. Dr Arvind Chopra, Secretary, BJD India was made the chairman. Director General Health Services, Government of India, has sanctioned a Govt funded national project to gather further population data. • Target children, aged 10-15 years, in schools on a theme ‘talk to children on bone and joints’; each BJD member will try to cover at least 5 schools in the year ahead.
